I contacted the museum to inform them of my travel plans and explain my interest in the area. I discovered that there was a Pioneer Museum in Florence-within ten miles of Rockvale. My information about the area and the lives of my great-grandparents was very limited, but I was always curious to see the area and learn more about it. Nearby cities with airports include Pueblo (40 miles), Colorado Springs (50 miles), Aspen (115 miles), and Denver (130 miles).Several years ago, I had planned to travel to Colorado Springs and decided that I would like to take that opportunity to find out more about the mining town of Rockvale where my grandmother spent four childhood years in the late nineteenth century. The Royal Gorge Bridge & Park is a regional highlight (just a 25 mile drive). Scenic drives are another way to enjoy the region’s diverse landscape. The unique topography of the region makes it a fantastic bird watching destination, as well as a recreational hub for hiking and biking, nature walks and picnics, whitewater rafting, river surfing, fishing, and more. Brush Hollow Reservoir in Penrose and the Arkansas Riverwalk in Cañon City are just a short drive away.

Boasting small town charm, natural beauty and plenty of history, Florence is located in Fremont County, just west of Pueblo and southeast of Cañon City in southern Colorado.
